Palm Springs is one of America's most livable cities, if you have the money, but Palm Springs is also a very popular tourist destination, featuring many interesting districts and neighborhoods. With naturally-fed spring water, lending the city its name, Palm Springs is hemmed in by the imposing San Jacinto Mountains to the west and south, and stretches across the Colorado Desert.

The city of Palm Springs is laid out on the ubiquitous grid pattern, with the downtown district stretching for half a mile, and Palm Springs features numerous golf courses and immaculate neighborhoods. The town is also surrounded by several other affluent communities, such as North Palm Springs and Desert Springs districts to the north, and Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert to the southeast.


Downtown District

Also known as 'The Village' and the 'The Loop', the downtown district of Palm Springs is where you can indulge in shopping, dining and nightlife and spot famous people. Apart from the numerous shops and fine restaurants, downtown Palm Springs is also home to several gay nightclubs, including the world renowned Hunter's, as well as some top attractions like The Plaza Theater and the historic Village Green buildings.

Rancho Mirage

Lying to the southeast of Palm Springs, in between the communities of Cathedral City and Palm Desert, is Rancho Mirage. Known for its abundance of superb restaurants and country clubs, Rancho Springs is just a short trip from Palm Springs and features the likes of Stuart Anderson's Black Angus, Kobe Japanese Steakhouse, and Chart House on the famed 'Restaurant Row'. The Tamarisk Country Club, Mission Hills Country Club, and the Lodge at Rancho Mirage (formerly the Ritz Carlton) are also here.

Desert Hot Springs

The community of Desert Hot Springs is located to the northeast of Palm Springs' downtown district and also features soothing waters bubbling up from the deep. There are many hotels in this area, including the Desert Hot Springs Spa Hotel and Miracle Springs Hotel and Spa, boasting hot spring water.

Palm Springs Residential Areas

If you are interested in spotting celebrity homes in Palm Springs, you will want to get on a tour and visit the upmarket Las Palmas and Little Tuscany areas, where elaborate residences feature homes built in an Italian style. South Ridge is the most exclusive residential area of Palm Springs, but is strictly off-limits to tourists unfortunately.

South Palm Springs District

South Palm Springs is the best place in the city to be based for those who are thinking of visiting the Indian Canyons, Palm Springs' nearest hiking option. This district features moderately-priced hotels and restaurants, and lies along South Palm Canyon Drive. The Smoke Tree Ranch and Stables, as well as the popular Canyon Country Club, also reside in this area.
